Italy political debate intensifies over femicide prevention and resources

Political debate has intensified in Italy following a series of femicides involving six women killed by partners or former partners. Baldelli of Fratelli d'Italia criticized former Pesaro Mayor Matteo Ricci for using the tragedy for political propaganda, specifically contesting Ricci's claim that the government has focused only on harsher penalties rather than prevention.

In response to these criticisms, data from Istat indicates an expansion of anti-violence infrastructure in Italy. The number of active anti-violence centers rose from 281 in 2017 to 409 in 2024, supported by 702 local service desks. Additionally, refuge houses increased from 464 in 2023 to 503 in 2024.

Financial allocations for 2024 totaled 80.2 million euros for the operation and strengthening of the anti-violence network. For 2025, 44 million euros are designated for existing centers and refuge houses, with an additional 5 million euros for new centers and 20 million euros for the acquisition or construction of new refuge house properties.
