Italy: Political shifts and deadlock over CSM elections

Italy's Parliament faces a potential deadlock in the upcoming election of ten lay members of the High Council of the Judiciary (CSM). Majority parties are reportedly considering blank ballots as the center-right coalition struggles to reach an agreement.

Amidst these negotiations, a potential candidacy for Antonio Di Pietro, the former prosecutor associated with the Mani Pulite investigation, has emerged under the Fratelli d'Italia quota. However, Forza Italia has expressed firm opposition to his candidacy. Party leaders Enrico Costa and Stefania Craxi stated that Di Pietro's history is incompatible with the CSM's mission to ensure judicial autonomy and impartiality, citing concerns over past political use of justice.

In separate parliamentary movement, Deputy Simonetta Matone has left the Lega to join the Forza Italia-Berlusconi group. Matone, a former magistrate, cited disagreement with the Lega's “sovereignist drifts” and expressed a preference for the moderate, pro-European, and legalistic stance of Forza Italia.
