Italy: Political tensions rise over vigilante groups and urban occupations

In Lecco, the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI) has issued a condemnation following an incident where a group of approximately ten individuals dressed in black marched through the city center. The group claimed their actions were intended to ensure city security and combat urban decay. ANPI criticized the group, characterizing the movement as an attempt at “vigilante justice” and calling on the Prefecture and Police Headquarters to intervene to protect democratic institutions and the rule of law.

In Rome, a national mobilization is planned for Saturday as various activist groups converge to support occupants of the Spin Time site. The protest follows the July eviction of the building, which had been occupied for 15 years and declared uninhabitable after a fire. While some activist groups have dissented from the initiative, the Democratic Party (PD) has expressed support through Senator Cecilia D’Elia, who praised Mayor Roberto Gualtieri’s administration for its efforts to resolve the situation. Occupants are calling for the formal acquisition of the property and greater community involvement in urban transformation.
