Italy postpones budget approval amid EU negotiations

The Italian government has postponed the Council of Ministers' approval of the 2027 budget bill to allow for ongoing negotiations with the European Commission. The government is seeking greater fiscal flexibility to define the final measures.

Key priorities for the economic plan include support for youth, the elderly, healthcare, families, and energy costs. The total endowment of the 2027 Budget Law is estimated between 23.2 and 23.5 billion euros. To fund the budget, the government is considering a contribution of approximately 5 billion euros from the banking and insurance sectors.

Opposition parties have expressed concern regarding the delay, warning that a postponed timeline could force a rushed parliamentary examination. Meanwhile, banking leaders, including Intesa Sanpaolo CEO Carlo Messina, have criticized the proposal for a sector-specific levy, arguing against unilateral contributions that deviate from previous agreements.
