Italy: President Mattarella and Confintesa address labor dignity and wage stagnation
Italian President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the role of labor as a vehicle for democracy and social cohesion during a ceremony at the Quirinale to award the ‘Stelle al Merito del lavoro’. Mattarella warned against a societal divide between a few wealthy individuals and a large impoverished class, cautioning that viewing work as mere alienation could lead to a loss of freedom and rights.
Separately, the Confintesa trade union announced its IX Consultative Assembly, scheduled for October 24 in Rome. The event will focus on wages and the constitutional promise of Article 36. Discussions will address economic data showing that real wages for private sector employees in Italy are 6.6% lower than in 1990, and that Italian real wages remain 6.1% below levels seen at the start of 2021, representing a significant gap compared to other major economies.
