Italy promotes blood donation through community festivals and school programs

In Italy, initiatives to promote blood donation and civic responsibility are expanding through community events and educational programs.

The Piglio Blood Donor Group is celebrating its 17th Blood Donor Festival on October 3, 2026. The event includes a social lunch and an information booth focused on blood component donation, a topic deemed urgent due to rising oncological pathologies, particularly in pediatric patients. The group, founded in 1995, reported collecting approximately 7,327 vials of blood through 84 donations this year, in addition to plasma and platelet donations performed by volunteers in Rome to support cancer patients.

Simultaneously, the Italian Federation of Blood Donor Associations (FIDAS) has launched the eighth edition of the ‘A Scuola di Dono’ competition for the 2026/2027 school year. Aimed at primary and secondary school students across Italy, the contest encourages creative projects—such as drawings, videos, or podcasts—to promote altruism and the importance of blood donation. The program seeks to engage students as ambassadors of donation, specifically targeting those reaching adulthood to encourage voluntary and conscious participation.
