Italy promotes hidden slow‑travel itineraries to ease overtourism

Tourism organisations in Italy are highlighting five off‑the‑beaten‑path routes that combine architecture, archaeology and nature, encouraging visitors to explore remote areas by foot, bike or kayak. The itineraries feature secluded spots in Tuscany, such as the Garfagnana canyon and the Lago di Bilancino, and heritage sites in the Sannio Beneventano region, including the Arco di Traiano and the Castello di Montesarchio.

A complementary seven‑day programme links Lazio and interior Campania, guiding travellers through historic hill‑top villages, rural landscapes, abbeys and local cuisine. The itinerary emphasizes a slow‑travel pace, short daily drives and ample time for walks, aiming to relieve pressure on over‑touristed destinations and showcase lesser‑known cultural and natural assets of central Italy.
