Italy promotes startup growth and SME digitalization through MIMIT incentives
Italy's Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) is driving innovation and digital transformation through two key incentive programs.
The Smart&Start Italia program, managed by Invitalia, has facilitated the collection of €65.8 million in private venture capital for innovative startups over the last four years. A distinctive feature of this measure is the debt conversion mechanism, which allows startups to convert a portion of their subsidized loans into non-repayable grants when they attract private investment. As of August 31, 2026, 85 operations have been approved, with 61 involving third-party investors such as Business Angels and Family Offices.
Additionally, MIMIT offers digitalization vouchers to support SMEs and professionals in adopting software, cloud services, and hardware. The incentive provides up to 50% of eligible expenses, capped at €20,000 per request. Companies can utilize various models, including direct purchases or subscriptions, to implement digital solutions tailored to sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, and professional services.
