Italy: Proposal for Reddito di Cittadinanza 2.0 emerges

Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement, has proposed a new version of the welfare measure known as Reddito di Cittadinanza 2.0. The proposal aims to expand economic support to individuals currently excluded from the Meloni government's Inclusion Allowance and Support for Training and Work.

The initiative, developed through the M5S Nova participation process, seeks to address poverty affecting an estimated 13 million citizens in Italy. Early details suggest a potential annual income threshold of 6,500 euros. Beyond direct financial aid, the plan emphasizes a revision of active labor policies to combat wage stagnation and labor exploitation.

The proposal is gaining traction within center-left political circles. The Democratic Party has expressed favor, while Italia Viva has shown a cautious openness to the idea. Progressive forces are expected to work toward a unified strategy regarding resources and beneficiary criteria as they prepare for future elections.
