Italy proposes 2027 car tax exemptions for specific vehicle categories

The Italian government has announced a temporary exemption from the car tax (bollo auto) for the year 2027, targeting vehicles with a power output not exceeding 80 kW. While intended to reduce costs for families, the measure faces potential legislative expansions and bureaucratic challenges.

Members of the center-right coalition are proposing amendments to broaden the relief. Marco Osnato of Fratelli d'Italia has proposed extending the exemption to vehicles with up to 160 kW that are registered for 6 to 9 seats, specifically to benefit large families with at least one minor child. Additionally, Antonio Tajani of Forza Italia has suggested that the exemption should apply to all first cars, regardless of power, similar to property tax exemptions for primary residences.

Implementation may be complicated by various factors, including vehicle co-ownership, temporary insurance, and changes in ownership. The final details of the relief are expected to be confirmed alongside the 2027 Budget Law.
