Italy proposes 300 million euro plan to requalify highway stations
A national plan to requalify Italian highway stations has been presented at the Chamber of Deputies, proposing an investment of approximately 300 million euros. The initiative, promoted by FlixBus in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, ANAV, ANCI, the Transport Regulation Authority (ART), and the National Consumers Union, aims to align Italian bus terminals with European quality standards for intermodality.
The proposal seeks to direct investments from the upcoming budget law toward improving collective mobility infrastructure. A study conducted by FlixBus between June and August 2026 highlighted significant gaps between bus terminals and major transport hubs like railways and airports.
Security remains a primary concern for users. Nationally, the average safety rating for highway stations is 5.7 out of 10. This figure drops significantly in major metropolitan hubs; for instance, 63% of travelers at Milan Lampugnano identified security as a priority concern, with an average rating of 4.7, while Genova-Fanti d’Italia saw similar issues with a 4.9 rating.
