Italy proposes European F-35 training center in Trapani
Italy has proposed the establishment of a European F-35 training center at the Trapani-Birgi Air Base in Sicily. The initiative aims to alleviate capacity pressures on training infrastructure in the United States caused by the rapid expansion of the F-35 fleet, which now includes 20 countries and over 1,200 aircraft.
If realized, the center is expected to begin initial training sessions by the end of 2028, reaching full operational capacity by late 2033. The facility would integrate production, maintenance, and training within Italy, building upon the existing final assembly and maintenance center in Cameri. This integration is intended to increase European operational autonomy and provide a local alternative for European allies to train pilots and maintenance personnel.
While the United States government has expressed support for the plan, specific commitments regarding the provision of resources have not yet been made. Key details regarding funding, management, access to the facility, and the allocation of shared aircraft and training quotas remain subject to ongoing negotiations.
