Italy proposes new traffic rules for motorcycle corridors

A preliminary draft of a new Italian Highway Code, currently under parliamentary review, introduces regulations to facilitate the movement of motorcycles and emergency vehicles during traffic congestion.

On multi-lane urban roads with separate carriageways, motorists will be required to create a central corridor by moving to the edges. Drivers in the leftmost lane must move toward the left margin, while those in the rightmost lane must move toward the right margin. This rule applies specifically when traffic is stationary or moving at very low speeds.

Additionally, the draft allows motorcycles and mopeds to use emergency lanes on highways and extra-urban roads during congestion, provided they maintain low speeds and yield to emergency services. Failure to comply with the new urban corridor rules could result in fines ranging from 80 to 320 euros and the loss of two driver's license points.
