Italy protests: Diplomatic advisories issued amid violent unrest

Violent cost-of-living demonstrations have erupted across northern Italian cities, including Milan, Bologna, Turin, and Bergamo, prompting diplomatic advisories for foreign nationals. The unrest, which began on October 17, involved masked protesters clashing with riot police using stones and projectiles, leading to the use of water cannons and tear gas by authorities.

In Milan, reports indicate more than 200 arrests were made over two days of unrest, with many being minors. Protesters were documented smashing shop windows and setting fires near Piazza Duomo. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence, attributing the chaos to “hooligans” and organized groups who exploit peaceful demonstrations to sow disorder.

In response to the instability, the Philippine Consulate General in Milan advised Filipinos to avoid crowds and major city squares, particularly after dark. Similarly, the Embassy of India in Italy issued a warning to Indian nationals to remain vigilant and follow local news to ensure their safety during the ongoing demonstrations.
