Italy: Protests erupt over civil rights and fascist-era symbols

Protests and political debates regarding historical fascist symbols and civil rights have emerged in the Italian regions of Umbria and Lazio.

In Orvieto, over 200 people gathered for a demonstration organized by a coalition including Anpi, Spi-Cgil, and various LGBT+ and feminist associations. The participants aimed to defend the Italian Constitution and civil rights against the political views promoted by the ‘Futuro Nazionale’ movement. Key themes of the protest included the protection of reproductive rights, gender equality, public healthcare, and freedom of information.

In Viterbo, a controversy has erupted over a ‘Casa del Balilla’ inscription discovered during restoration work on the Mariano Buratti classical high school. Approximately 100 protesters, including teachers and students, held a sit-in at Palazzo Gentili demanding the removal of the fascist-era text. The issue has divided the provincial council; the Democratic Party (PD) has proposed an act to ensure its removal, while members of Fratelli d'Italia (FdI) have opposed the move, characterizing it as iconoclasm and a threat to historical preservation.
