Italy is facing intense political and social debate over a proposed antisemitism bill that seeks to formally adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. The legislation, which has already passed the Senate, is scheduled for discussion in the Chamber of Deputies on October 2.

Critics, including Amnesty International and various human rights organizations, argue that the bill could act as a tool for censorship by conflating antisemitism with legitimate political criticism of the State of Israel. Activists have expressed concerns that the inclusion of IHRA illustrative examples—such as comparing Israeli policy to that of the Nazis—could chill academic and political speech.

In response to the bill, a nationwide mobilization involving over 250 organizations held demonstrations across Italy, including a major sit-in in Rome. Within the political sphere, the Democratic Party (PD) is experiencing internal divisions. While some members support the bill, others, including lawmaker Laura Boldrini, have signaled they will not vote for it, citing risks to freedom of expression. The Five Star Movement and Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra have declared their opposition to the measure.
