Italy pursues dual migration strategies with Spain and Germany

The Italian government is pursuing divergent migration and border strategies with Spain and Germany. Regarding Spain, Italy has maintained its suspension of Schengen border controls, a measure currently set to last until August 31. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that border security and terrorism prevention remain priorities, noting that the situation in Ceuta remains concerning. Spanish authorities have also maintained random checks on travelers from Italy through September 7.

In contrast, Italy is working toward a bilateral agreement with Germany to resolve technical issues regarding “Dublin migrants.” An upcoming meeting between Interior Ministers Matteo Piantedosi and Alexander Dobrindt is expected to facilitate cooperation.

These shifts in migration policy have caused friction within European political circles. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has faced criticism from members of the Italian Democratic Party (PD) and Spanish socialists for aligning with Giorgia Meloni’s stance on stricter border controls and irregular migration. Critics have characterized the Italian suspension of Schengen as “purely propagandistic,” while Frederiksen’s position is viewed by some leftist leaders as a move toward a more restrictive European agenda.
