Italy accelerates AI agenda with research breakthroughs, policy forums and new models

A Senate conference in Rome brought together lawmakers, industry and defence leaders to discuss AI, cybersecurity and digital sovereignty, stressing the need for a shared national strategy. At Humanitas Hospital in Rozzano, researchers deployed AI‑generated synthetic data to create thousands of virtual patients, speeding up trials for rare blood and liver diseases while protecting privacy. In Delhi, scientists used AI and genomics to develop a blood‑test‑based early‑cancer screen and digital‑twin models that help clinicians match therapies to individual tumours. The OECD reported that most workers see AI improving performance and job satisfaction, though it also reshapes many routine tasks. Italy’s state digital infrastructure was criticised as overly vulnerable, prompting calls for stronger cyber‑resilience. In the United States, the Department of Commerce approved OpenAI’s ChatGPT‑5.6 family (Solar, Terra, Luna) and a voice‑first ChatGPT‑Live‑1, while Meta and xAI announced competing visual‑generation models. At the UN in Geneva, Deputy Minister Alessio Butti highlighted Italy’s AI governance focus on safety, transparency and global access, and urged inclusion of diverse languages and cultures. Researchers from Cambridge warned that AI data‑center expansion could create urban heat islands raising ambient temperatures by up to 2 °C, potentially affecting hundreds of millions of people. In Umbria, the Tekna consortium launched a free, EU‑funded AI training programme for regional businesses and professionals. Across these initiatives, Italian stakeholders are seeking to harness AI’s productivity gains while managing ethical, security and environmental challenges.
