Italy pushes for social conditionality and fuel support in EU agricultural reform

Italian Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida has led initiatives within the European Union to influence the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for 2028-2034. Italy and Spain have submitted a joint letter to the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU to advocate for the principle of social conditionality. This mechanism would link the receipt of EU agricultural aid to compliance with labor laws regarding safety and transparency.

In a separate development, European Commissioner for Agriculture Christophe Hansen has expressed openness to a request from the Italian government to use EU resources to support farms facing high diesel costs. The European Commission is currently conducting technical and legal evaluations to determine the feasibility of this support.

Italian agricultural organizations, including Coldiretti and various labor unions (FAI-CISL, FLAI-CGIL, and UILA-UIL), have welcomed these political stances. They emphasize the importance of protecting farmers' incomes and ensuring that agricultural funds are tied to the protection of workers' rights.
