Italy pushes forward hunting law reform amid parliamentary debate

Deputy Francesco Bruzzone (Lega) told the Agriculture Committee that the farming sector – represented by Coldiretti, Confagricoltura, Cia, Copagri and the Alliance of Agricultural Cooperatives – wants the hunting law amendment, already approved by the Senate, to be enacted quickly to curb wildlife damage to crops. He highlighted support from Ispra and Federparchi for a plan that balances biodiversity with control of invasive species.

In the same committee, Forza Italia introduced a set of amendments aimed at tightening the bill: limiting hunting zones and seasons, restoring double sanctions for illegal hunting in protected areas, banning live‑bird calls and restricting night‑vision devices. Meanwhile, the Five Star Movement announced it will file one million amendments, arguing the reform threatens Italy’s natural heritage and biodiversity. The European Commission is monitoring the proposal for compliance with EU Habitat and Birds directives.
