Italy pushes health reforms with community care hubs and home assistance program

The Italian government’s territorial health reform, outlined in Ministerial Decree 77/2022, creates "Case di Comunità" (Community Houses) that integrate medical, psychological and social services. Psychologists are formally included in multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive, person‑centred care for patients with chronic and complex conditions, addressing both physical and mental health needs.

In Liguria, the regional health department has launched the "Meglio a Casa" initiative, allocating €2 million to support rapid home‑care after hospital discharge. Families can claim reimbursement for a regular caregiver for up to 30 days, aiming to maintain patients at home, lower readmission rates and prevent premature institutionalisation. The programme runs from 3 August to 30 December, or until funds are exhausted.
