Italy pushes privatization of Catania and Comiso airports under Golden Power

Minister of Enterprises and Made‑in‑Italy Adolfo Urso announced that the sale of the Catania and Comiso airports is being examined under Italy’s “Golden Power” powers, allowing the government to intervene in strategic assets. The tender attracted 14 proposals, each seeking to acquire at least a 51 % stake in the airports, which are managed by SAC.

Labor union Cisal has asked for clarification on post‑sale governance and requested job guarantees for airport workers until 2049. The Lega party, represented by senator Nino Germanà, criticised the process, questioning the role of the Southeast Chamber of Commerce – overseen by a special commissioner for more than three years – and alleging that political interests may be influencing the privatisation.

The debate highlights concerns over transparency, employment protection and the influence of regional politics as Italy moves to restructure its airport management system.
