Italy RAI license fee: 2026 requirements and exemptions

The RAI license fee for private use remains set at 90 euros annually for 2026. This amount is typically collected through electricity bills in ten monthly installments of 9 euros from January to October.

Specific exemptions are available for individuals over the age of 75 who meet certain economic and cohabitation requirements. To qualify, the individual's annual income, combined with that of a spouse, must not exceed 8,000 euros. Additionally, no other cohabitants may have their own income, with exceptions for domestic workers such as caregivers or maids.

Exemptions are based on the income from the previous year (2025). Those who turn 75 by January 31, 2026, can receive the exemption for the full year. Those turning 75 between February 1 and July 31, 2026, qualify for the exemption for the second half of the year.

It is important to note that the fee is tied to the possession of a television set rather than the consumption of RAI programming. Owning devices like computers, smartphones, or tablets does not automatically trigger the fee unless the device functions as a television. To avoid charges if no television is owned, taxpayers must submit a substitute declaration to the Agenzia delle Entrate.
