Italy re-examines 1992 Falcone and Borsellino assassinations
A national debate has resurfaced in Italy regarding the 1992 assassinations of judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. At a conference hosted by the National Federation of the Italian Press, journalists and experts discussed the need for continued investigation into the Capaci and Via D'Amelio massacres.
Promoters of the initiative, including over 60 Sicilian journalists, have appealed to President Sergio Mattarella and the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission. They argue that investigations should not be limited to the “mafia-contracts” theory but must also examine potential links to subversive groups, external political and economic interests, and historical efforts to mislead investigators.
In a related discussion, prosecutor Antonio Gratteri addressed the historical isolation of Falcone and Borsellino. He noted that their innovative anti-mafia method—which focused on following money trails and dismantling organizational structures rather than just arresting individual perpetrators—faced significant resistance and marginalization from within the judiciary and established institutions during their lifetimes.
