Italy: Regional laws expand access to medically assisted suicide

In the absence of a unified national law, several Italian regions are implementing local regulations to manage medically assisted suicide. Following rulings by the Constitutional Court, which found it discriminatory to allow the refusal of medical treatment without allowing a choice to end one's life via physician-provided substances, regions are moving to establish procedures.

Currently, Toscana, Sardegna, and Emilia-Romagna have approved regional laws. In Lombardia, the first case involving a patient with progressive multiple sclerosis was managed entirely by the regional health service. Other regions are at various stages of the process: Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, and Umbria are in discussion; several others, including Liguria, Campania, and Piemonte, have proposals pending or upcoming; and Lazio and Calabria are conducting signature collections for popular initiative laws.

While these regional steps provide pathways for individuals facing unbearable physical or psychological suffering, critics express concern that the lack of national standards may impact the protection of vulnerable individuals and the support provided to caregivers.
