Italy rejects German migrant transfers amid Dublin Regulation dispute

Italy has officially notified Germany that it will refuse the return of asylum seekers under the Dublin Regulation, escalating a diplomatic dispute over migration management. The Italian Ministry of the Interior communicated this decision to German authorities, specifically contesting the transfer of three individuals whose arrivals occurred before the June 12 entry into force of the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

Rome is basing its refusal on two primary arguments. First, it maintains that these specific cases fall under different management rules established during bilateral negotiations in December. Second, Italy is demanding a compensation mechanism, citing the 2,200 migrants rescued and brought to Italy by German-operated NGO vessels since the beginning of the year. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has also called for an end to German NGO landings in Italian ports.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that her government will continue to prioritize border protection, security, and the enforcement of rules. This disagreement highlights growing tensions within the European Union regarding shared responsibility and the practical application of new asylum systems.
