Italy rejects one extradition request for ex‑deputy Carla Zambelli; appeal pending

Italy’s Court of Cassation has denied the extradition request for former Brazilian federal deputy Carla Zambelli concerning her conviction for hacking the National Justice Council (CNJ). The decision leaves the second extradition request – tied to a separate conviction for illegal firearm possession and illegal coercion – still under review. Zambelli, who remains free in Rome after being detained for flight‑risk concerns, awaits the outcome of the pending appeal.

The case adds to a series of recent setbacks for Brazil’s attempts to secure extraditions abroad, following refusals by courts in the United States and Spain. Brazilian authorities have indicated that, should extradition be approved, Zambelli would be transferred to a women’s prison in the Federal District.
