Italy removes elderly driving restrictions from traffic code draft
The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has removed proposed driving restrictions for motorists aged 85 and older from a draft of the new traffic code. The original proposal included measures such as banning elderly drivers from using motorways, limiting travel to a 100-kilometer radius from their residence, and enforcing an absolute ban on alcohol while driving. These changes were removed at the explicit request of Transport Minister Matteo Salvini.
Separately, a draft of the new traffic code proposes a revised fine system for speeding violations. Under the new rules, fines could be calculated per kilometer per hour over the limit. On motorways, the draft suggests a fine of ten euros for every km/h exceeded. On urban roads with limits of 50 km/h or less, fines would range from five to ten euros per km/h depending on the severity. The proposal also includes stricter penalties for motorway speeding, where exceeding the limit by more than 20 km/h could result in a 15-day driving ban and the loss of four penalty points.
