Italy repatriates 23 Egyptian citizens to Cairo via charter flight
Italy has repatriated 23 Egyptian citizens to Cairo via a charter flight, an operation conducted in collaboration with Egyptian authorities and coordinated by the Frontex Agency. The group included 19 individuals held in various Repatriation Centers (CPR) across Italy, including locations in Milan, Turin, and Caltanissetta, as well as individuals expelled from police headquarters in Milan, Varese, and Messina.
All 23 individuals had police or criminal records, including offenses against persons and property. Notably, one Egyptian citizen who landed in Lampedusa on July 7 became the first person to undergo the accelerated asylum and repatriation procedure at the border, a mechanism introduced by the new EU Migration and Asylum Pact that entered into force in June.
The operation was facilitated by a bilateral migration agreement between Italy and Egypt, which allows for the use of charter flights for the readmission of Egyptian citizens who entered Italy illegally. In 2026, Italy has completed 16 such charter operations to Egypt, involving 381 individuals.
