Italy reports continued drop in road fatalities amid rising accident numbers

A weekend in late July 2026 saw a sharp decline in road deaths in Italy, with 16 victims recorded – 3 motorists, 9 motorcyclists, 1 pedestrian, 2 cyclists and 1 e‑scooter rider – down from 25 the previous weekend. The victims were spread across Lombardy, Lazio, Campania and several other regions. The Association of Road Police Supporters (ASAPS) highlighted the result as an exceptional improvement for the holiday travel period.

National data for 2025 show a similar downward trend in fatalities. The country recorded 2,868 road deaths, marking a 5.3% fall from the prior year, while the number of accidents rose by 2.2% and injuries increased by 1.7%. In Naples, 2,670 incidents caused 27 deaths and 3,330 injuries, a 22.9% drop in deaths despite a 5.0% rise in accidents. Campania experienced 11,392 accidents with 244 deaths and 15,839 injuries, a 6.5% reduction in fatalities but increases in collisions and injuries. Authorities note a stark contrast between urban and extra‑urban roads, with city streets showing fewer deaths but more accidents, and highways showing the opposite pattern.
