Italy reports record life expectancy amid rising absolute poverty
According to the 2026 Bes (Equitable and Sustainable Wellbeing) report by Istat, life expectancy at birth in Italy reached a historic high of 83.7 years in 2025. While years lived in good health are also increasing, the report highlights significant socioeconomic disparities.
Absolute poverty remains a critical issue, affecting 9.3% of the population—over 5.4 million people. This represents an increase from 6.9% in 2014. Economic difficulties are most pronounced in Southern Italy, where absolute poverty affects 11.5% of the population, compared to 8.5% in the North and 7.4% in the Center.
Additionally, 7.5% of the population lives in households reporting significant financial difficulties. The report notes that Italy continues to lag behind European averages in key areas such as employment, education, and innovation.
