The Italian Ministry of the Interior (Viminale) released its 2026 security dossier, reporting a 10% decrease in total crimes during the first half of the year compared to 2025. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi attributed this trend to increased territorial control and effective government policies, stating that Italy remains one of the safest countries globally.

Key crime statistics show a 15.3% drop in voluntary homicides and a 37% reduction in female homicide victims. The latter figure includes data following the implementation of the new femicide crime (articolo 577 bis) in December 2025. Other notable decreases include thefts (-11.4%), robberies (-12.3%), and sexual violence (-7.1%).

On the immigration front, sea arrivals dropped by 52.1% in the first half of 2026. Conversely, total repatriations increased by 34.3%, driven largely by assisted voluntary returns. The dossier also highlighted anti-mafia efforts, noting that 4,722 anti-mafia interventions were conducted between October 2022 and June 2026, including significant oversight in Calabria regarding large-scale public works.
