Italy reports surge in sexually transmitted infections, Parma cases rise
Public health data show a nationwide increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Italy, with syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia diagnoses climbing, especially among young people, men who have sex with men and foreign‑born residents. In Parma, 96 STI cases were recorded in 2025 and 94 cases have already been reported in the first half of 2026, mirroring the national trend. Syphilis, once considered almost eradicated, has risen from 28 cases in 2025 to 27 in early 2026, including two recent instances of ocular syphilis that had not been seen for years. The local health authority launched a dedicated STI clinic two years ago, which has now provided specialist consultations, screening and counseling to 670 patients, focusing on rapid, confidential access for youth.
Health officials stress the need for stronger prevention campaigns, comprehensive sexual education and condom use, while expanding screening services to curb the silent spread of infections that often present without symptoms.
