Italy reports two animal cruelty incidents prompting police action

A dog was killed on July 22 when a van traveling at high speed struck the animal as its owner crossed a pedestrian crossing in Rassina, Castel Focognano, Arezzo province. The driver did not stop, and Mayor Lorenzo Remo Ricci appealed for witnesses to help identify the vehicle.

In a separate case in San Vitaliano, Naples province, authorities rescued six abandoned dogs – three of them puppies – after an anonymous tip revealed severe neglect and the dead body of another dog. The dogs were seized and taken to a shelter for care, and the 53‑year‑old landowner was charged with animal cruelty.

Both incidents highlight ongoing concerns about animal welfare and the role of police and veterinary services in responding to reported abuse in Italy.
