Tor Sapienza residents protest crime and drug use in Rome
Residents of the Tor Sapienza district in Rome have organized protests and evening patrols to combat rising crime, including theft, drug dealing, and urban decay. Local community leaders, such as Gianluca Garofalo of ‘Tor Sapienza Sicura’, have reported significant issues centered around an occupied building in via Tallone, alleging the presence of crack, heroin, and even illegal weapons.
While many residents expressed fear regarding the arrival of fentanyl—citing the appearance of individuals in states of dissociation often referred to as ‘zombies’—local authorities and health experts have disputed these specific claims. The Prefect of Rome, Lamberto Giannini, and various addiction specialists stated that while drug seizures of cocaine, crack, and heroin are frequent, there has been no evidence or seizure of fentanyl in the capital. Experts suggest that the visible effects seen on the streets are more likely linked to a growing crack epidemic rather than the synthetic opioid.
