Italy road safety report: fatalities decrease while accidents and injuries rise

According to the 2025 ACI-Istat report, Italy recorded 177,207 road accidents involving injuries, a 2.2% increase compared to 2024. While total fatalities fell by 5.3% to 2,868 deaths, the number of injured persons rose by 1.7% to 237,822. On average, the country experienced 485 accidents, 7.9 deaths, and 652 injuries daily.

The data reveals significant regional disparities. Seven provinces—Prato, Fermo, Crotone, Vercelli, Vibo Valentia, Isernia, and Siena—have already met the European Union's goal of halving road deaths compared to 2019 levels. Conversely, provinces such as Aosta, Oristano, and Barletta-Andria-Trani have seen the highest percentage increases in mortality since 2019.

Safety trends for vulnerable users show mixed results. Pedestrian fatalities decreased by 10.9%, but deaths involving cyclists rose by 23.2%, with electric bike fatalities increasing by 50%. Scooter-related deaths also saw an 8.7% rise. In the province of Teramo, accidents increased by 9.6% even as deaths dropped by 35%.
