Autostrade per l’Italia completes San Donato tunnel excavation on A1
Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI) has completed the excavation of the 950-meter San Donato tunnel on the A1 motorway between Firenze Sud and Incisa Reggello. This project is a central component of a larger 18-kilometer expansion of the Autostrada del Sole, representing a total investment of approximately one billion euros. The new tunnel is designed to accommodate three lanes of traffic heading south.
Arrigo Giana, CEO of ASPI, stated that the tunnel is expected to be operational for vehicle transit within 12 to 14 months, with the goal of completing the entire three-lane section by mid-2028. The excavation was completed without interrupting traffic in existing tunnels, which continue to serve as a strategic link for north-south connectivity.
In other Italian infrastructure news, Minister Matteo Salvini has expressed the intention to begin construction on the Messina Strait Bridge by December. Additionally, various regional maintenance and urban projects are underway, including watercourse maintenance in Genoa, urban regeneration in Pisa, and roadwork by Terna in Florence.
