Italy rolls out sorpassometro to police illegal overtaking on high‑risk roads

Italy has begun installing a new electronic device called the sorpassometro on selected high‑risk road sections. Unlike speed cameras, the system detects overtaking maneuvers that are prohibited in zones such as blind curves, narrow lanes, or where a continuous line is present. Drivers caught performing a forbidden overtaking can face fines ranging from €167 to €1,308 and a loss of 10 driving licence points; repeat offences may lead to suspension. The devices are placed only after authorization from the prefecture, based on documented accident statistics or hazardous road geometry. The aim is to curb dangerous overtaking that could otherwise result in serious collisions.
