Italy conducts national food safety and road enforcement campaigns

Italian authorities have conducted several enforcement campaigns targeting food safety, road safety, and vehicle regulations.

In a national campaign conducted by the Nas Carabinieri and the Ministry of Health throughout July, inspections of bars and restaurants revealed that 54% of checked establishments were non-compliant regarding the handling and serving of treated water. The campaign resulted in 256 total violations, including one criminal charge for fraudulent food trade, 255 administrative sanctions, and the seizure of 2,000 liters of unfiltered water. Ten businesses were suspended due to hygienic or structural deficiencies, with an estimated commercial value of 4.7 million euros.

Simultaneously, law enforcement has intensified road safety checks across various regions. In Piacenza, local police used specialized testing equipment to inspect e-bikes and scooters, finding that 5 out of 7 vehicles were non-compliant, often due to illegal engine modifications. In the Alto Adige region, Carabinieri patrols near mountain passes reported numerous driving violations and several drivers losing their licenses due to alcohol consumption. In Fermo, a crackdown on drunk driving resulted in 11 revoked licenses and 10 reports to judicial authorities, with a notable number of offenders being new drivers. Additionally, alcohol testing in Marina di Ravenna showed high rates of intoxication, particularly among minors, with 75.9% of tested individuals under 18 testing positive.
