Italy sanctions Cairo Editore over graphic Garlasco murder images
The Italian Data Protection Authority (Garante della Privacy) has sanctioned Cairo Editore for publishing graphic images related to the Garlasco murder case. The penalty follows a complaint from the family of Chiara Poggi, who argued that the publication of images showing the victim's body and blood-stained crime scene in a weekly magazine violated the dignity of the deceased and caused significant distress to her parents.
The Authority ruled that the dissemination of such imagery, long after the event, added no essential information to the news coverage and failed to respect the principle of informational necessity. The regulator noted that media attention had crossed the line from reporting into a “morbid spectacle.”
Separately, the Garlasco case has resurfaced in public debate regarding the original investigation. Defense lawyers for Alberto Stasi, convicted of the murder, have raised questions about forensic evidence, specifically regarding fingerprints on a soap dispenser at the crime scene. Stasi has previously criticized the investigative techniques used by the Ris (Scientific Investigation Department) in Parma.
