Italy school staff regulations for medical and personal leave

Regulations regarding sick leave and various forms of leave for Italian school personnel involve specific obligations and financial implications. For teachers on medical leave, INPS manages fiscal inspections to verify illness status. Personnel must remain at their indicated domicile during established availability windows: 10:00 to 12:00 and 17:00 to 19:00, every day of the week including holidays. Exceptions to this rule are permitted for medical appointments, emergencies, or urgent pharmacy visits for life-saving medication.

Regarding extended absences, school staff may access a sabbatical year, which is a right available once every ten years without requiring specific justification. However, this period is unpaid and does not include social security contributions. To maintain pension coverage during such a year, employees must pay the contributions themselves, which amounts to approximately 33.3% of their salary. Additionally, personnel may request leave for personal, family, or study reasons for up to two years, though these requests are subject to administration approval.
