Italy sea temperatures reach 33.2°C, impacting aquaculture

Record-high sea temperatures are causing significant damage to aquaculture in Italy. On July 31, water temperatures reached a maximum of 33.2 degrees Celsius at the Bocca Scanno station in the Sacca di Goro.

These extreme temperatures, combined with poor water circulation and oxygen deficiency, have led to severe environmental deterioration. Confcooperative Agroalimentare e Pesca reported losses of up to 90 percent in clam populations in July. Similar alarms were raised in late August regarding mussel farms between Goro and Porto Garibaldi, where over 90 percent of the product, including essential seeds for future production, was compromised by high temperatures and anoxia.
