Italy protests: Security measures deployed amid threats of violence

Major security operations are underway across several Italian cities, including Rome, Florence, and Pescara, following threats of violent demonstrations against the rising cost of living. In Pescara, authorities investigated social media groups on WhatsApp and Telegram where users allegedly incited attacks on law enforcement and commercial targets. This led to the indictment of four individuals, including three minors, for aggravated incitement to crime. Police seized items including a knife and a softair pistol during searches.

In Rome and Florence, luxury retailers have taken precautions by covering storefronts with wooden panels or closing early to prevent looting and vandalism. In Florence, high-end jewelry shops on Ponte Vecchio implemented early closures. Economic assessments suggest that these security measures and business disruptions could result in a gross economic impact exceeding 14 million euros across 11 major Italian urban centers.

Despite the high alert and significant police presence, the planned demonstrations in Pescara remained largely peaceful, aided by heavy rainfall and the presence of local football ultras who gathered in the squares. In Rome, police conducted checks at several locations, detaining individuals found with masks and spray paint.
