Italy sees 40% rise in summer home burglaries

A Verisure‑Censis observatory report shows that home burglaries in Italy increased by almost 40% from May to August 2024, rising from 9,714 cases in May to 13,581 in August. The majority of incidents (72.6%) occurred while the residence was empty, and thieves most often entered through windows or balcony doors (46.4%). The report advises owners to secure doors, windows, secondary accesses, and domestic installations before leaving for holidays.

In a related incident, Carabinieri in Camporotondo Etneo, Sicily, identified a 53‑year‑old resident of Catania as a suspect in a burglary that took place on 25 April. After reviewing surveillance footage and conducting field investigations, the police filed a formal complaint against the suspect for home theft.
