AI-powered speed cameras begin testing on Italian highways
New AI-driven speed camera technology is being tested on Italy’s Fi-Pi-Li highway. Developed by Sodi Scientifica, the SafeDrive system uses high-resolution cameras and infrared LEDs to monitor multiple lanes simultaneously. Beyond measuring speed, the artificial intelligence is designed to detect driver distractions, such as manual smartphone use, and identify passengers not wearing seatbelts. The system also includes a module to verify vehicle insurance and inspection status via license plate recognition.
To address privacy concerns, the software automatically blurs the faces of vehicle occupants before images are archived. During this current experimental phase, the device is not issuing fines; the data is being used solely to test the effectiveness of the algorithms.
In a separate development regarding traditional enforcement, the Unione delle Terre d’Argine has approved the return of six fixed speed cameras following a period of suspension. The project, valued at approximately 170,760 euros, involves a 24-month rental agreement with Safety21 Spail for equipment that meets updated ministerial certification standards. The cameras will be installed in Carpi, Soliera, and Novi di Modena.
