Italy sees high demand for business and R&D incentive programs

Italy has seen significant activity in government-backed business and innovation incentive programs. The Integrated Self-Employment Plan (PIA), launched by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, has approved over 3,200 projects in its first year. This initiative, co-financed by the European Union, has activated 260 million euros in investments and provided 215 million euros in subsidies to approximately 3,500 young people under 35. Key sectors benefiting include tourism (28%), personal services (24%), and business services (15%).

Separately, the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy reported high demand for the ‘Scoperta Imprenditoriale II’ incentive program. On its first day of opening, 337 applications were submitted, requesting 635.4 million euros in subsidies for research and development projects valued at 880.6 million euros. The program targets southern regions including Campania, Puglia, and Sicily, with a focus on smart industry, energy, environment, and health. Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises represent over 88% of the applicants, and 80% of the initiatives involve collaborative projects, many of which partner with universities and research bodies.
