Italy Approves Centralized Port Governance with New “Porti d'Italia” Agency

A round‑table convened by Confindustria in Rome gathered maritime‑sector leaders who argued that Italy’s fragmented port system needs a single, nationally coordinated steering body. The discussion underlined structural challenges, last‑mile connectivity and the need to integrate ports with the wider road‑rail network to keep the country competitive.

The government response is the draft creation of “Porti d’Italia”, a fully public‑capital entity with operational autonomy that will act as a unique cabina di regia for all Italian ports. Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi said around 70 % of the nation’s maritime logistics flows through Italian ports and that a central authority is essential to coordinate activities, set a national strategic plan for key infrastructure and preserve the financial health of port authorities while boosting competitiveness against other European hubs.
