Italy sees rise in charitable legacy interest and social generosity
New research conducted by Walden Lab for the Comitato Testamento Solidale reveals a growing culture of generosity and charitable legacies in Italy. According to the study, 78% of Italians are aware of charitable legacies, and 23% of those over the age of 50 are considering allocating part of their estate to social causes. This figure represents a significant increase from 12% in 2018.
The data shows that for many Italians, generosity is expressed through time and presence rather than just financial surplus. Specifically, 47% of respondents view dedicating time to others as the primary expression of generosity, followed by emotional support (44%) and volunteering (43%). The family remains the central environment for these values, cited by 65% of participants.
For the non-profit sector, charitable legacies are becoming an increasingly vital resource. Between 2020 and 2024, the proportion of non-profit organizations receiving at least one legacy rose from 61% to 77%. Additionally, the impact of these legacies on total fundraising has nearly doubled, increasing from 8% to 14%.
