Italy sees rising fake‑news impact and youth push for digital detox
A Doxa survey of Italian adults shows that almost half – 48% – have believed at least one piece of false information online. The study links the spread of misinformation to social‑media algorithms that prioritize emotional engagement, the proliferation of AI‑generated content, and insufficient digital‑literacy safeguards.
A separate observation by the AIM observatory, conducted with Factanza Media and Ipsos Doxa, found that 94% of Italian Gen‑Z and Millennial respondents feel the need to disconnect from digital platforms. This “digital detox” trend reflects growing awareness of the mental‑health effects of constant online exposure and may prompt changes in how content is consumed and regulated.
Both findings highlight a dual challenge for Italy: combating pervasive fake news while addressing the younger generation’s desire for reduced screen time.
