Italy sees sharp drop in young drivers as licence costs and renewal rules tighten

A recent analysis shows that only 46% of Italians under 25 obtain a driving licence at age 18, down from 72% among those over 50. Over the past decade, cars registered to young people have fallen 33%, reflecting both environmental concerns and the high cost of obtaining and maintaining a vehicle – licence fees, training, insurance, fuel and taxes have risen sharply.

In parallel, the government announced changes to licence renewal starting in 2026. Renewals will require a medical exam and will follow an age‑based schedule: every 10 years up to age 50, then every 5 years to 70, every 3 years to 80 and every 2 years thereafter for categories A and B. Heavier‑vehicle licences have their own intervals. The reforms aim to ensure driver fitness and streamline the renewal process.

Together, these trends suggest a growing disconnect between younger Italians and car ownership, driven by economic pressures and tighter regulatory requirements.
